A Curriculum for our youngest Storytellers

  • For students age 5 through 9 years
  • Curriculum for families/teachers to enjoy at your own pace.
  • Series of short videos and downloadable practice pages
  • Students learn storytelling basics like how to begin, how to end, and the role of characters.
  • Everyone uses storytelling as the foundation of conversation.
  • Students learn how to ask the best questions.
  • Learning how to listen first before speaking, and trying to build on the work of others.

What is a Tale Spinners Session Like?

  • Each session consists of short video instructions
  • David introduces the theme and we invite each student to engage at their own pace using whatever storytelling medium is best for them.
  • There are warm up storytelling exercises.
  • David teaches a storytelling lesson and then shows how to use the practice page. Your young storyteller will likely be sharing their stories with you!
  • And get ready to laugh because as you can see, things get pretty silly!

Foundations

The fundamental storytelling and story-listening skills introduced to our youngest members will become the foundation of their self-expression and empathetic listening.

Interactive Support

By using "free telling" tools, spinners practice spontaneous storytelling in a spirit of support and service to their community . Kindness is the glue that connects us.

Delight and Silliness

David is a warm and silly person who enjoys having fun while maintaining a safe environment. There are always costumes and funny voices and talking objects as a part of the good times.

Session One: Start with Listening

In the word Storytelling, there are two smaller words: Story and Telling.  One might think that those two are the most important components of storytelling, but in Story Steps Education, we actually prioritize a third component first: listening.

Session Two: Narrow and Wide Listening

In this session you’ll learn about two kinds of listening that are used for two different purposes.

Session Three: Body and Surprise Listening

These two kinds of listening can be used in combination with other kinds, so that you can learn more about what is around you, as well as learn more about yourself!

Session Four: How to Respond

In this session, we will find other combinations of listening, depending on the circumstance.

Session Five: Story Helpers: Fairies and Trolls

In the next few sessions, we will use four different magical creatures to help us better understand and practice storytelling.

Session Six: Story Helpers: Dragons and Mermaids

For this session we are going to introduce the Mermaid and Dragon component of storytelling.

Session Seven: Telling Combinations: Fairies and Dragons

The combination of Fairies and Dragons makes for exciting storytelling.

Session Eight: Telling Combinations: Trolls and Mermaids

Like we did with Fairy and Dragon mode, we’ll investigate what it feels like and how to engage in Troll and Mermaid.

Session Nine: Telling with All Four Helpers

Now that you have learned all sorts of fun listening tools and storytelling tips, we put it all together

Session Ten: All Listening and Telling Combinations

In this final session, we will encourage you to keep telling stories.
