Dogs Know How to Make Friends

Dogtown Storytelling Camp is for children ages 5 to 10. Campers will all use storytelling skills to help them with common challenges like meeting new friends and fitting in with groups. This camp teaches how to be a part of the group while keeping what makes us our unique selves. And we look to DOGS and their welcoming nature to help us!

David (and Frances) introduce Dogtown Storytelling Camp

The Gift of Dogtown Camp

In Dogtown Storytelling Camp we will identify what makes the dog version of ourselves special in all the world: the skills as well as the challenges. Then we find ways to use our "dog self" to help us better fit in with the larger group and meet new friends. Our aim is to learn how to integrate into a group while being our true selves. And in a real way that helps the group as a whole!

What Kind of Dog are YOU?

Campers use fun handouts to determine their "dog selves": what attributes, behaviors and preferences describe who they are.

How do you relate to others?

Using storytelling exercises, campers begin to explore social strategies that might help them leverage what makes them unique.

How to be confident and calm

Campers find that using storytelling and story-listening techniques makes social situations so much easier !

Dog "Kinds"

In the first session, campers are given a questionnaire that will help them see themselves as a dog. They will compare their picture of themselves with different breeds or attributes of dogs and set the storytelling in motion.

Exploring the ALLDOG

Campers will then explore the activities and qualities that connect all dogs - that all dogs share and that dogs use to find a connection. This will serve as a model for developing our own connective strategies.

Going to the Dog Park

The storytelling experience culminates with a trip to the dog park, and each dog self has a chance to try out new skills. This is always a big moment and one to be practiced, but our hope is that your little camper will use these social skills every day.
